"The body is your temple . Keep it pure and clean for the soul to reside in" B.K.S IYENGAR

Iyengar Yoga

Yoga with a difference.

This is a unique form of yoga, the aim is to teach body awareness, balance, precision, alignment and direction. The use of props allows the student to attain all the benefits of their yoga practice without injury. The postures will not only strengthen the physical body, but will cleanse the internal organs as well as quieten the mind, bringing peace and harmony.

Yoga is an ancient, subtle science, that of the body, mind and soul. The practice of yoga, in time leads the student to a sense of peace and feeling of being one with his or her environment.

The Practice of yoga, makes the body strong and flexible, it also improves the function of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and hormonal system. Yoga also brings emotional stability and clarity of mind, but that is only the beginning of the journey to Samadhi self-realisation, which is the ultimate aim of yoga.

Iyengar yoga practice is different from other schools of yoga; our main concern is for safety and the wellbeing of our students. Our practice, involves the use of props to help achieve maximum benefits without any injury. The ancient yogis used logs of wood, stones and ropes to help them practise asanas effectively.

B.K.S Iyengar, extending these principles has invented props which allow asanas to be held easily and for longer duration, without strain or injury.

The use of props, makes the practice of the poses easier, less tiring and more enjoyable for all levels of yoga students, whether they are weak or strong, young or old, beginners or advanced students.

How Props Help

A yoga prop is any object that helps stretch, strengthen, relax and improve the alignment of the body. It helps sustain the practice of asanas for a longer duration, and conserves energy. The props help retain key movements and subtle adjustments of the body by providing more height, weight and support.

The yoga poses practised with the props allow both action and relaxation simultaneously. It activates the muscles, tones the body organs and relieves mental and physical stress and at the same time relaxes tired muscles. This helps rejuvenate the entire body, without causing physical fatigue.

Students, find the practice of poses with props very encouraging as it gives them confidence to attempt difficult poses and ensures correct practice. Props provide a sense of direction and alignment and help to increase and enhance the understanding of each pose.
